Waking Up In Galveston
03:56
|
|||
This bed is far from empty
It’s full of bottles and broken dreams
And it’s bad without my baby here
It’s tearing me at the seams
And I’m on the road, I’m all alone, the snow is falling down at home
And here the prairie flowers might be bloomin’
But I don’t give a damn for all the palm trees in the world
I just want to get back home and see my darlin’
And there’s a cold wind blowin’ ‘cross my heart strings
Ain’t a cloud in sight, but I just can’t feel the sun.
Because my baby’s going to sleep in Massachusetts
And I’ll be waking up in Galveston
I wake up in a fever
AC’s blasting, but I’m burning hot
The hazel eyes I been dreaming on
Become the floodlights in the parking lot
I can’t sleep, so I head to town, the bouncer looks me up and down
Then waves me in without checking ID
I glance around and sit down on a barstool alone
Order one gin and tonic, and I get a beer for me.
There’s a cold wind blowin’ ‘cross my heart strings
And the band is hot, but I can’t have any fun.
Because my baby’s going to sleep in Massachusetts
And I’ll be waking up in Galveston
I finish off this bucketful of Lone Stars
Each empty seems to scream your name
They’re all dancing, playing pool, but I just wear my stern expression
Thinking ‘bout you, wondering if you feel the same
Don’t bother with your room service, the complimentary eggs and grits
Don’t try to sway me with your southern charms
I don’t bother to unpack, because I’m always headed back
To burrow deep within my baby’s loving arms
There’s a cold wind blowing ‘cross my heart strings
I am counting down to lift off 3-2-1.
Because my baby’s going to sleep in Massachusetts
And I’ll be waking up in Galveston.

Come Next Spring
03:29
|
|||
I treat my darlin' so cruel
Keep her suffering like a bitter, angry fool
And they tell me that I'll lose her with the way that I abuse her
Still I love her and I hope she'll stay.
And I know that I can lose my temper sometimes
Scream and holler like I'm trying to save my life
But when the yellin's over, I'm so sorry and I show her
Put it behind us, baby what do you say.
When a year's gone by
You'll forget the way you cried
You'll forget my anger's cruel sting
With all the lovin' and the fightin' we'll do from now 'til then
You won't remember this come next spring
I can be as gentle as a lamb
But sometimes I lose control, after all I'm just a man.
I flew into a bright red rage and blackened up her pretty face
But I got down and I begged her on my knees
I awoke with the early morning light
All sewn up in my bedclothes, arms and legs bound up so tight
And all I saw was the iron pan and the ring gone from her hand
And then darkness, only darkness in the end.
When a year's gone by
She won’t forget the way she cried.
She won't forget my anger's cruel sting
But with the lovin', and the fighting, that she’ll do from now ‘til then
She will forget me come next spring.
She will forget me come next spring.

Blizzard of '78
03:17
|
|||
It was the winter, the blizzard of ‘78
On our city fell a blanket of snow
One hundred people, sadly, coldly met their fate
But here’s a story that you oughtta know
While the new moon’s storm surge and thundersnow
Stranded thousands in fifteen foot drifts
That two day nor’easter meant two weeks of play
The sweetest valentine gift
Amidst disaster, ruin, troubles and toil
You might wonder just how you will cope
Finding family in your neighbors is a myth to foil
In the darkest of times we create bright hope
Celestial gleam, castles crystalline
Urban fields of silver and white
Sparkling, shining window scene
Wintry sight belies perilous night
Once upon a doorstep all came to see
A giant red heart from above
Made with neighborly camaraderie
A marvelous symbol of love
Amidst disaster, ruin, troubles and toil
They relied on each other to cope
Finding family in your neighbors is a myth to foil
In the darkest of times.
So many stories and cries of mourners
They relied on each other to cope
Finding family in your neighbors is a myth to foil
In the darkest of times we create bright hope

Excavator Driver
03:28
|
|||
The excavator digs the quarry
Dumps the gravel into the lorry
Which is just a word for truck they use in England across the sea.
When I was just a wee lad
I went and I asked my dad
Father what can I do when my childhood is through
He said “you’ll drive an excavator like me!”
You’ll be an Excavator Driver
Excavator Driver
Father what can I do when my childhood is through
He said “you’ll be an excavator driver.”
My mom, she’s also in the business
She retired last year ‘round Christmas
We threw a great party, everybody came to celebrate her.
But now the quarry has gone away
Filled up with years of rain.
It’s a cool make-out spot, it’s where we swim when it’s hot
And it was dug by an excavator
By an Excavator Driver
It’s a cool make-out spot, it’s where we swim when it’s hot
And it was dug by an excavator driver
While hiking by the old train tracks
Saw a kid sitting on a hubcap
He had a little toy truck that was well-loved but none too clean
He looked up and he said, “Man,
One day I’ll roam this whole land.
And when I’m no longer a boy, I won’t need this rusty old toy
I’ll get my hands on a real earth machine
I’ll be an Excavator Driver
Excavator Driver
When I’m not longer a boy, won’t need this rusty old toy
I’ll be an excavator driver.

Luminous Things
02:24
|
|||
We lie here dreamy in our dwelling place
A mystic future to surprise and embrace
Pale moon rises full as a ball
We hear the haunting beauty of a loon’s call
Crickets singing through the night
A lullaby makes all alright
This hollow hour will unfold its power
Morning will bring a bright new flower
Smokey calm for the honeybee
Tide’s ebb and flow has that effect on me
Transfixed by a wave and the spirit it brings
These are among my musings of luminous things
April springs and pale blossoms fall
Bright birch shines verdant and tall
Images morph from cloud to cloud
This sky shall hold me as the words we vowed
Wood thrush song through an Acadian breeze
Morning fog rises across the sea
Meadows ablaze with a sunrise sing
A waking chorus of luminous things

Across the Ocean
03:30
|
|||
It’s been one long rainy day since you’ve been living in the Hague
though my weatherman did say it’ll soon be dry, still our woes will multiply
While you are so far across the ocean
Though the defense agrees with the prosecution
They can run but they can’t hide / From a charge of genocide
When you’re far across the ocean
Your room’s still warm / Up on the third floor / Come back we can go on tour / and kill these blues / Are you wearing wooden shoes?
While you are so far (so far) across the ocean
Though the defense agrees with the prosecution
You go everywhere by bike
You stuck you’re finger in a dike
When you’re far across the ocean
The sound of electric guitar
A stranger with a familiar scar
You are so far (so far) across the ocean
Though the defense agrees with the prosecution
You spend all your countless hours
High amongst the tulip flowers
When you’re far across the ocean
This bird has flown / Is your heart made of stone?
These three mountains stand alone / And our oceans burn
‘Til the seasons turn, turn, turn
You are so far (we are) across the ocean
And I never had the slightest notion
I’d live every day in fear
And fill a bathtub with my tears
When you’re far across the ocean
