When first upon this country’s shores, I chanced to lay my eyes
Upon a fair young gentleman and swore I’d make his bride

Westward ho the wagons go, we joined that rolling train
Our youngest caught the fever and he died upon the plain

We raised our roof and family midst the waving prairie grass
But soon my man grew distant and no longer came to me
Choosing to spend his time in town in another’s company.

I watch him shine his leather boots and brush his finest coat
And tie a silken handkerchief around his fresh shaved throat
He rides away leaving behind his wife children and gun
Three days to spend upon the bed of his other one.
I saddle up the big black mare and follow into town
To meet them ‘neath the prairie moon and lay them in the ground.
